Adult classes
Hughes Karate-do trains adults and older children with a progression of increasingly
complex techniques built upon a solid foundation. We use kata as the foundation
of our art and build knowledge in the student from that starting point.
In addition to the open-hand techniques, we also train using traditional Okinawan
weapons including the bo, nunchaku, kama, tonfa, and tekko. Training with weapons
is a great way to build awareness of body positioning and movement. Also, managing
a weapon requires significant concentration that interestingly improves one's open-hand
skills.
We use drills known as the kihon kata to work fundamental stances, movement,
and striking skills. We also frequently train with Yakusoku exercises that
pair up two people in a kata-like series of predefined attacks and defense moves.
Practical self-defense techniques are taught including escapes from grabs and chokes.
We take movements from our kata and demonstrate how they can be used for effective
defense agains any kind of attack.
